Welcome to Acton Shapiro

Acton Shapiro is a specialist independent company based near York providing consultancy and research in the fields of health and social care.  The company was established in 1996.

Our core areas of work are:

  • Applied research, service evaluations and reviews - in particular, the evaluation of new and innovative services
  • Supporting service redesign - in particular, primary and community health services (including primary care premises), social care services and inter-agency services
  • Organisational development - in particular, business planning, preparation of business cases and training/facilitation.

The majority of our work is with:

  • public sector organisations (notably the Department of Health, Primary Care Trusts, Strategic Health Authorities, Local Authorities)
  • multi-agency initiatives (e.g. Sure Start Programmes/Children's Centres) which operate within the public sector
  • national voluntary sector organisations in the health and social care field (e.g. British Heart Foundation, Long-Term Medical Conditions Alliance and The Encephalitis Society)
  • social enterprises (e.g. Expert Patients Programme)
  • independent contractors (e.g. GP practices)
  • private sector organisations (including APMS providers and property developers).

In collaboration with academic partners, we have undertaken a number of projects for:

  • national research bodies (e.g. NHS Service Delivery and Organisation Research & Development Programme, Joseph Rowntree Foundation) and
  • national advisory/inspection bodies (e.g. Social Care Institute for Excellence).

Within our team of eight directly-employed staff, we have front line experience in health care management, nursing, social care, academic research and the voluntary sector.  We use a portfolio of qualitative and quantitative techniques in our work and our focus is on finding practical solutions that work for the teams, organisations and communities involved.
