Acton Shapiro is a specialist independent company based near York providing consultancy and research in the fields of health and social care. The company was established in 1996.
Our core areas of work are:
- Applied research, service evaluations and reviews - in particular, the evaluation of new and innovative services
- Supporting service redesign - in particular, primary and community health services (including primary care premises), social care services and inter-agency services
- Organisational development - in particular, business planning, preparation of business cases and training/facilitation.
The majority of our work is with:
- public sector organisations (notably the Department of Health, Primary Care Trusts, Strategic Health Authorities, Local Authorities)
- multi-agency initiatives (e.g. Sure Start Programmes/Children's Centres) which operate within the public sector
- national voluntary sector organisations in the health and social care field (e.g. British Heart Foundation, Long-Term Medical Conditions Alliance and The Encephalitis Society)
- social enterprises (e.g. Expert Patients Programme)
- independent contractors (e.g. GP practices)
- private sector organisations (including APMS providers and property developers).
In collaboration with academic partners, we have undertaken a number of projects for:
- national research bodies (e.g. NHS Service Delivery and Organisation Research & Development Programme, Joseph Rowntree Foundation) and
- national advisory/inspection bodies (e.g. Social Care Institute for Excellence).
Within our team of eight directly-employed staff, we have front line experience in health care management, nursing, social care, academic research and the voluntary sector. We use a portfolio of qualitative and quantitative techniques in our work and our focus is on finding practical solutions that work for the teams, organisations and communities involved.
Acton Shapiro has Investors In People accreditation and is a member of the UK Evaluation Society, NHS Alliance and the British Association of Gerontology. |

Outcomes into PracticeActon Shapiro has new commissions from two local authorities to help them develop an outcomes approach to social care. We provided a two-day workshop for Halton Borough Council in December, looking at how outcomes can be embedded in Adult Services. We shall also be working with Swansea Learning Disability Services, bringing together front line practitioners, commissioners and providers, to consider the implications for service planning. More
Sale & Leaseback Work Acting for a major primary care Client, Acton Shapiro has recently facilitated the sale and leaseback of a large GP practice in Hull. This has involved identifying the practice and negotiating on the terms of the sale and leaseback. The advantages for the practice have been the immediate release of equity capital and transferring the risk away from the GP Partners, enabling them to focus on their clinical activities.
