Evaluation of the Strength to Change Domestic Violence Service in Hull
NHS Hull set up the Strength to Change service in April 2009 with the aim of helping male perpetrators of domestic violence and their partners.  A city-wide social marketing campaign was also conducted.  Acton Shapiro is working in collaboration with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) to evaluate the service as well as the impact of the social marketing campaign, following a commission by NHS Hull in early 2009.

The social marketing campaign is being evaluated through:
  • interviewing a sample of professionals in Hull (including GPs, police officers, social workers and teachers) to ascertain their awareness of the campaign and the ‘Strength to Change’ programme
  • collecting data from Humberside police force on calls received for domestic violence incidents in Hull
  • monitoring referral rates for Hull Relate and the Hull Women’s Refuge.

The Strength to Change programme is being evaluated through:

  • monitoring calls to the helpline and use of the website
  • telephone interviews with a sample of callers who do not take up the offer of the service
  • face-to-face and telephone interviews with men using the service and their partners
  • interviews with staff from the programme and stakeholders from referring services.

A final project report will be published at the end of 2010.
